Welcome to the Black Lantern Gaming blog.

This space exists to share what I've learned running campaigns and one-shots over the years — the prep techniques that work, the tools that don't, and the moments at the table that make it all worthwhile.

What to Expect

You'll find posts about:

  • Session prep workflows — How to balance preparation with improvisation
  • Foundry VTT — Modules, macros, and making technology serve the story
  • Narrative design — Building campaigns that feel alive and responsive
  • Table culture — Safety tools, session zero frameworks, and player agency

I won't pretend to have all the answers. These are just notes from the field — what's worked for me, what hasn't, and what I'm still figuring out.

The Philosophy

Every game I run starts with a simple question: What does this table need to feel immersed?

Sometimes that's a meticulously crafted battlemap. Sometimes it's the right ambient track at the right moment. Sometimes it's just knowing when to let silence breathe.

Good GMing isn't about perfect prep — it's about creating space for your players to surprise you.

Stay in Touch
